A QUICK GUIDE ON HOW WOMEN SHOULD BE ... BECAUSE TIMES ARE BAD!
Caution is central to a woman’s experience of life. It is prescribed, imbibed and practiced with rigor, so that women can be ‘safe’. Be Careful is a satirical piece that challenges this notion of safety. Rooted in a widespread anger about the everyday violence against women, the performance confronts the unfortunate conflation between the manner in which women dress/behave/look/are and the atrocities committed against them.
Although rooted in India, the piece resonates with people all over the world.
Thoda Dhyaan Se was created in 2013, a year after the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder in New Delhi and almost immediately after the gagng rape of a journalist in Shakti Mills, Mumbai. The country and its cities had been taken over by conversation around gender based violence and women's safety. In 2015, it was invited to Zurich Theatre Festival as part of their short pieces and the piece opened itself up, remade itself a little, and arrived on stage as Be Careful. Since then, it has travelled to several contexts in India and internationally and has gathered many layers as the world shape shifts and throws newer challenges at us.
